The inspiration for our family bakery came from when I was pregnant with our son. With my serious cravings for sweets, I just couldn’t wait the hour it would take my husband to return with yummy treats, so I started baking for myself. Instead of pickles and ice cream, it was red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting for me!
My Italian heritage speaks volumes! There is just something about Italians and their kitchens. Both of my grandmothers loved to cook, so at our family feasts, you would think there were 40 people coming when there were only eight of us. It’s all about the warmth of home and family surrounded by delicious food.
“Since the name is derived from the Italian word maccarone or maccherone, I am claiming it to be part of my Italian heritage!”
-Nicole Spurge, Founder
While I was in my kitchen baking and very pregnant, I was completely addicted to watching the Food Network, especially the cupcake and cake competitions. I started experimenting with a lot of different cupcake recipes, changing or adding ingredients. I would bake batches of cupcakes at a time. The word got out and suddenly, people were calling and placing orders for my specialties – red velvet, lemon blueberry with cream cheese frosting, pumpkin spice and chocolate peanut butter.
During this time, my dream for owning a bakery became a very clear vision. I wanted to turn my passion into a business that I could build for my family, eventually bringing my husband in to run the operational side and getting other family members involved.
With the support of our family The Dessert Tree has become an exciting and delicious reality!
